Shushanik Kurghinian

Shushanik Kurghinian was a passionate advocate of the human rights of the oppressed – women, children, the working class, and the refugees of the Armenian Genocide. She viewed her poetry as giving voice to the voiceless, and she saw her role as a poet as profoundly political.

Siamanto

Siamanto (Atom Yarjanian, 1878–1915) was a renowned Western Armenian poet, public figure, and one of the most influential figures in Armenian literature. Born in Agn, he received his higher education at the Sorbonne University in Paris, where he came into close contact with European culture. His works, including the collections Heroically, Sons of Armenia, and Bloody News from My Friend, are characterized by a patriotic spirit, the depiction of national tragedy, and calls for an unyielding struggle for survival. With his unique, prophetic, and imagery-rich style, he became the primary singer of Armenian suffering and rebirth. Siamanto fell victim to the 1915 Armenian Genocide, martyred along with the rest of the Armenian intelligentsia.

Սիամանթօ (Ատոմ Եարճանեան, 1878–1915) արեւմտահայ հռչակաւոր բանաստեղծ, հասարակական գործիչ եւ հայ գրականութեան ամենաազդեցիկ դէմքերէն մէկն է։ Ծնած է Ակն, իսկ բարձրագոյն ուսումը ստացած է Փարիզի Սորպոնի համալսարանին մէջ, ուր մօտէն շփուած է եւրոպական մշակոյթին հետ։ Իր ստեղծագործութիւնները, ինչպէս՝ «Դիւցազնօրէն», «Հայորդիներ» եւ «Կարմիր լուրեր բարեկամէս» ժողովածուները, կը բնորոշուին հայրենասիրական շունչով, ազգային ողբերգութեան պատկերմամբ եւ անդուլ գոյապայքարի կոչերով։ Ան իր ինքնատիպ, մարգարէական ու պատկերաւոր ոճով դարձաւ հայկական տառապանքի եւ վերածնունդի գլխաւոր երգիչը։ Սիամանթօ զոհ գնաց 1915-ի Հայոց Ցեղասպանութեան՝ նահատակուելով հայ մտաւորականութեան հետ միասին։

Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein, who lived from 1930 to 1999, was a vastly talented American writer, poet, cartoonist, and Grammy-winning songwriter renowned for his irreverent, subversive humor and poignant children’s literature. Born in Chicago, he built an eclectic career drafting cartoons for Playboy and writing hit folk-country music, including Johnny Cash’s famous track A Boy Named Sue. However, he achieved enduring global fame for his imaginative children’s poetry books, notably Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic, which he illustrated himself with signature minimalist, black-and-white line drawings. His bittersweet 1964 masterwork, The Giving Tree, remains one of the most widely read, debated, and beloved allegories in modern publishing history.
