Hamasdegh

Hamasdegh (1895–1966) is one of the most talented prose writers and poets of Armenian diasporan literature. Born in the village of Perri in Kharpert, he settled in the United States in 1913, where he lived and created throughout his entire life. As a brilliant representative of the rural tradition in Armenian literature, he immortalized the image of the lost homeland, the simplicity of village life, and the inner world of the Armenian peasant with profound nostalgia in his famous works, such as The Village and Rain. Written in rich Western Armenian, Hamasdegh’s body of work stands as one of the most important pillars for the preservation of national identity in the diaspora.

Hagop Oshagan

Hagop Oshagan (1883–1948), born Hagop Kufejian, was a monumental Western Armenian novelist, playwright, and literary critic widely considered the most formidable prose stylist and critical mind in modern Armenian letters. Born in Soloz (near Bursa), he survived the 1915 Armenian Genocide by hiding disguised as a German officer in Constantinople before escaping to Greece, eventually spending his life in exile teaching and writing across Egypt, Cyprus, and Jerusalem. Oshagan’s literary philosophy was defined by a rejection of easy sentimentality and a fierce insistence on psychological realism and dense, complex language, best exemplified in his massive, unfinished trilogy about pre-genocide provincial life, Remnants (Մնացորդաց). Alongside his fiction, his colossal ten-volume critical masterwork, Panorama of Western Armenian Literature (Համապատկեր արեւմտահայ գրականութեան), established an authoritative, uncompromising framework for evaluating the Armenian written word, cementing his legacy as the ultimate gatekeeper of the nation’s cultural memory.
