Paruyr Sevak (real surname: Ghazaryan, 1924–1971) was a brilliant 20th-century Armenian poet, literary scholar, and translator whose work opened a new chapter in Armenian literature. Born in Chanakhchi village and educated in Yerevan and Moscow, he revolutionized Armenian poetry by introducing intellectual depth and philosophical inquiries. His masterpiece, the epic poem The Unsilenceable Belfry (1959), is dedicated to the life of Komitas and the tragedy of the Armenian Genocide. Sevak’s other beloved collections, such as Man on the Palm of a Hand and Let There Be Light, remain some of the most influential works of Armenian poetry to this day, and his untimely death in a car accident was a massive loss for the entire nation.
