Hovhannes Aivazovsky (1817–1900), born Hovhannes Aivazian, was a world-renowned Armenian-Russian Romantic painter universally celebrated as one of the greatest masters of marine art in history. Born to an Armenian family in the Black Sea port city of Feodosia, Crimea, his exceptional talent earned him a scholarship to the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Aivazovsky produced approximately 6,000 paintings, capturing the sea in all of its turbulent majesty, tranquil calms, and translucent lighting effects. His iconic masterpiece, The Ninth Wave (1850), perfectly exemplifies his unique ability to recreate the sublime power of water and light entirely from memory. Beyond his global renown as an official painter of the Russian Navy, Aivazovsky remained deeply connected to his heritage, frequently creating pieces that depicted Mount Ararat and Armenian cultural figures, while dedicating his later years to philanthropy in his hometown.
