Dr. Arra S. Avakian (1912–2010) was a prominent Armenian-American mathematician, aerospace tech scholar, and educator who dedicated much of his life to promoting Armenian heritage and culture. After earning a Doctor of Science in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1935, he served as a U.S. Army Colonel in World War II ordnance development and spent decades in industrial aerospace technology. In 1970, he pivoted into academia to become the first Professor of the Armenian Studies Program at California State University, Fresno. Beyond his teaching career, Avakian co-founded the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR), served as a deacon and community leader, and authored influential books—such as Armenia: A Journey Through History—while translating sixteen Armenian texts into English.
