Rouben Galichian was born in Tabriz, Iran, to a family of immigrant Armenians who had fled Van in 1915 and arrived in Iran via Armenia, Georgia and France. After attending school in Teheran he received a scholarship to study in the UK and graduated from the University of Aston, Birmingham, in engineering. His interest in geography and cartography started early in life but he began seriously studying this subject in the 1970s. In 1981 he moved to London with his family, where he had access to a huge variety of cartographic materials. His first book on this subject was Historic Maps of Armenia: The Cartographic Heritage (I. B. Tauris, London, 2004). The present volume is the result of his studies and research on medieval western and Islamic maps of the region south of the Caucasus.
Rouben Hakhverdian, born in 1950 in Yerevan, is a legendary Armenian singer-songwriter, poet, and guitarist widely revered as a founding figure of contemporary Armenian bard culture. Originally trained in theater and television direction, he developed a distinct author-performer style characterized by profound, melancholic lyrics, acoustic guitar arrangements, and a raw, soulful delivery. His vast discography primarily explores themes of personal reflection, social critique, and everyday urban life, effectively romanticizing the streets and atmosphere of Yerevan. His classic compositions, including the beloved children’s track Navak, the nostalgic Mer Siro Ashuny, and Yerevani Sirun Aghjik, remain deeply resonant cultural staples across generations both in Armenia and throughout the global diaspora.

Rouben Paul Adalian is Director of the Armenian National Institute in Washington, D.C. He is the author of From Humanism to Rationalism: Armenian Scholarship in the Nineteenth Century, the editor of Armenia and Karabagh Factbook, and associate editor of Encyclopedia of Genocide.
RONALD GRIGOR SUNY is Alex Manoogian Professor of Modern Armenian History at the University of Michigan. A specialist in the history of the non-Russian peoples of the Soviet Union, he is the author of The Making of the Georgian Nation and editor of Transcaucasia, Nationalism, and Social Change.
