Daniel Melnick

Daniel Melnick has written—in addition to THE ASH TREE—an earlier novel about the community of émigré musicians who fled Europe in the late 1930s and raised their families in Los Angeles, Hungry Generations; a study of music and modern literature, Fullness of Dissonance; and a novella about Israel during the Iraq war, with stories,Terror and Contrition. He was born in California, attended UC Berkeley, and has taught at UC Berkeley, California State University at Fresno, Cleveland State University where he retired in 2000 as an Emeritus Professor of English, and Case Western Reserve University. He is married to the artist Jeanette Melnick, whose painting is on the cover of THE ASH TREE.

Daniel Varoujan

Daniel Varoujan (1884–1915), one of the most talented and influential figures of early 20th-century Western Armenian literature, was born in the village of Prknik in Sebastia and received his higher education with the Mekhitarists in Venice and at the University of Ghent in Belgium. With his powerful and vivid poetry, including the collections «Սարսուռներ» (Shivers), «Ցեղին Սիրտը» (The Heart of the Nation), «Հեթանոս երգեր» (Pagan Songs), and the posthumously published «Հացին Երգը» (The Song of the Bread), he brought a new spirit and epic momentum to Armenian literature, singing of national suffering, rebellion, pagan beauty, and rustic labor. Varoujan was also one of the founders of the «Մեհեան» (Mehyan) literary movement, which sought to revive the powerful pre-Christian spirit of Armenian identity. His prolific life was tragically cut short at the young age of 31 when, during the Armenian Genocide, he was arrested in Constantinople and brutally martyred by Turkish perpetrators on the road to exile.

Դանիէլ Վարուժան (1884–1915), 20-րդ դարասկիզբի արեւմտահայ գրականութեան ամենատաղանդաւոր ու ազդեցիկ դէմքերէն մէկը, ծնած է Սեբաստիոյ Բրգնիկ գիւղը եւ բարձրագոյն ուսում ստացած Վենետիկի Մխիթարեաններու մօտ ու Պելճիքայի Կանտ (Ghent) համալսարանին մէջ։ Իր հզօր ու պատկերաւոր բանաստեղծութիւններով, ինչպէս՝ «Սարսուռներ», «Ցեղին Սիրտը», «Հեթանոս երգեր» եւ յետմահու լոյս տեսած «Հացին Երգը» ժողովածուներով, ան նոր շունչ ու վիպերգական թափ տուաւ հայ գրականութեան՝ երգելով ազգային տառապանքի, ընդվզումի, հեթանոսական գեղեցկութեան ու գեղջկական աշխատանքի մասին։ Վարուժանը նաեւ «Մեհեան» գրական շարժումի հիմնադիրներէն էր, որ կը ձգտէր վերակենդանացնել հայկական ինքնութեան նախաքրիստոնէական հզօր ոգին։ Անոր բեղուն կեանքը ողբերգականօրէն ընդհատուեցաւ շատ երիտասարդ տարիքին՝ 31 տարեկանին, երբ Հայոց Ցեղասպանութեան օրերուն ձերբակալուեցաւ Կոստանդնուպոլսոյ մէջ եւ աքսորի ճամբուն վրայ դաժանաբար նահատակուեցաւ թուրք ջարդարարներու ձեռքով։
