Description
This novel is a classic example of Armenian diasporan existentialist literature, forming a part of his renowned novel series The Persecuted. The core of the novel centers around a rented room in Paris, which is not merely a physical space, but a symbol of the isolation, poverty, and mental anxieties of the exiled and uprooted Armenian intellectual. Using an avant-garde style of stream-of-consciousness and internal monologues, Vorpuni portrays the protagonist's alienation from the French environment, the fear of losing one's identity, and the nightmare of past atrocities. Within the narrow walls of this room, the author encapsulates the worldview searching and existential emptiness of an entire generation that narrowly survived the Genocide.

Վէպը սփիւռքահայ գոյապաշտական (էքզիստենցիալիստական) գրականութեան դասական նմուշներէն մէկն է, որ մաս կը կազմէ անոր հանրայայտ «Հալածուածները» վիպաշարքին։ Վէպին առանցքը կը հանդիսանայ փարիզեան վարձու սենեակ մը, որ ոչ միայն ֆիզիքական տարածք է, այլեւ տարագիր ու արմատախիլ հայ մտաւորականին մեկուսացման, աղքատութեան եւ հոգեկան տագնապներուն խորհրդանիշը։ Որբունի գիտակցութեան հոսքի եւ ներքին մենախօսութիւններու յառաջապահ ոճով կը պատկերէ հերոսին օտարացումը ֆրանսական միջավայրէն, ինքնութեան կորուստի վախն ու անցեալի արհաւիրքներու մղձաւանջը։ Այս սենեակին նեղ պատերուն մէջ հեղինակը կը խտացնէ Ցեղասպանութենէն մազապուրծ եղած ամբողջ սերունդի մը աշխարհայեցողական փնտռտուքն ու գոյութենական դատարկութիւնը։
