The Ship on the Mountain (Նաւը լերան վրայ, 1943) is Kostan Zarian's monumental masterpiece and one of the most influential Armenian novels of the 20th century, depicting the birth, fall, and subsequent Sovietization of the First Republic of Armenia (1918–1920). The novel's central character, Captain Ara Topalian, arrives in landlocked Armenia with the dream of establishing shipping navigation on Lake Sevan, symbolizing the noble aspiration of the Armenian diaspora for repatriation and nation-building. The grueling, Sisyphian task of transporting a ship over dry land through the mountains toward the lake becomes a powerful metaphor for the historical fate of the Armenian people, their ceaseless struggle for survival, and the dream of saving their homeland amidst geopolitical catastrophes.
