Yervant Odian (1869–1926) was one of the most brilliant and influential Western Armenian satirists, novelists, and journalists in Armenian literary history. Born into an affluent and highly educated family in Constantinople (Istanbul), he utilized sharp, merciless humor to expose the social flaws, political hypocrisy, and cultural fragmentation of the Ottoman Armenian community during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His most famous creation is Comrade Panchoonie (Ընկեր Բ. Փանջունի), a legendary satirical anti-hero who embodies the destructive absurdity of detached, dogmatic political agitators.
During the 1915 Armenian Genocide, Odian was arrested and deported to the deserts of Syria, but he managed to miraculously survive the death marches through sheer luck, resourcefulness, and his knowledge of languages. Following the war, he returned to Constantinople and later moved to Cairo and Paris, continuing to write prolific social critiques, memoirs, and translations until his death from cancer in Egypt. Today, Odian is celebrated alongside Hagop Baronian as the pinnacle of Armenian satirical literature, remembered for his unique ability to turn profound national tragedies into sharp, enduring comedy.
Երուանդ Օտեան (1869–1926) արեւմտահայ ամենափայլուն եւ ազդեցիկ երգիծաբաններէն, վիպագիրներէն ու լրագրողներէն մէկն է, որ իր սուր ու անխնայ հումորով քօղազերծեց օսմանահայ համայնքի ընկերային արատներն ու քաղաքական կեղծիքները։ Կոստանդնուպոլսոյ երեւելի ընտանիքի մը մէջ ծնած Օտեան առաւելաբար ծանօթ է իր կերտած լեգենդար հակահերոսով՝ «Ընկեր Բ. Փանջունի»-ով, որ կը մարմնաւորէ իրականութենէն կտրուած ու կաղապարուած քաղաքական գործիչներու կործանարար անհեթեթութիւնը։ Մասնակիօրէն եւ հրաշքով փրկուելով 1915-ի Հայոց Ցեղասպանութեան գողգոթայէն ու աքսորի ճամբաներէն՝ ան շարունակեց իր բեղուն գրական կեանքը տարագիր վիճակի մէջ՝ Գահիրէի ու Փարիզի մէջ մինչեւ իր մահը։ Այսօր ան Յակոբ Պարոնեանի կողքին կը նկատուի հայ երգիծական գրականութեան գագաթնակէտը, յատկանշուելով հասարակական ու ազգային խոր ողբերգութիւնները մնայուն ու դիպուկ կատակերգութեան վերածելու իր բացառիկ տաղանդով։
