Tlgadintsi (Hovhannes Harutiunian, 1860–1915) was a prominent Western Armenian realist writer, educator, and public figure, who stood as one of the leading figures in depicting provincial life in Armenian literature. Born in the village of Tlgadin (Khoylu) near Kharpert, he was orphaned at an early age and received his education at the local Smbatian Academy. In 1887, he founded the National Central Academy of Kharpert and served as its principal until the end of his life, educating a brilliant generation of Western Armenian intellectuals. In his short stories, essays, and plays, he captured the struggles of provincial Armenians, the daily life of working peasants, and the traditional customs of the Armenian family. Tlgadintsi was martyred in 1915 during the Armenian Genocide in his native Kharpert.
