Jane Austen was an English novelist whose masterly use of social commentary, irony, and realism secured her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. She published four major novels during her lifetime—Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma—which brilliantly critiqued the British landed gentry. Her final novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published posthumously in 1817 after her death at age 41. Though she published anonymously and achieved modest success while alive, Austen’s timeless insights into human nature and women’s social status have earned her enduring global acclaim.
