Erich Maria Remarque (1898–1970) was a German novelist whose gripping depictions of war made him one of the most famous authors of the 20th century. Drafted into World War I, his firsthand trench experiences inspired his masterpiece, All Quiet on the Western Front, an international bestseller that humanized the “Lost Generation.” Because of his anti-war writings, his books were publicly burned by the Nazi regime, forcing him to flee Germany for Switzerland and later the United States. Remarque continued to write acclaimed novels exploring the psychological scars of war and the plight of refugees, including Three Comrades, cementing his legacy as a fierce advocate for humanism and peace.
