Description
This volume presents a collection of writings by Anania Shirakatsi—a medieval Armenian scholar, calendarist, cosmologist, mathematician, and geographer. It affirms that Armenian scientific thought was established on firm foundations from an early period. Many of Shirakatsi’s works remain relevant to this day. His Ashkharhatsuyts (Geography), in particular, encourages renewed appreciation and understanding of Armenia’s geographical knowledge and worldview.
Anania Shirakatsi is regarded as one of the pillars of medieval Armenian science. Prominent literary scholar Manuk Abeghyan considered him the founder of natural sciences in the Armenian tradition, writing: "Even though Armenians had some familiarity with calendars before Anania, it was this ‘calculator’ who, through his numerous writings, became a pioneer of calendrical science, cosmology, and meteorology.”

Միջնադարի հայ մտածող, տոմարագետ, տիեզերագետ, մաթեմատիկոս և աշխարհագրագետ Անանիա Շիրակացու աշխատությունների սույն ժողովածուն նպատակ ունի փաստելու, որ հայ գիտական մտքի զարգացումը դեռևս վաղ ժամանակներից դրվել է ամուր հիմքերի վրա: Մինչ այժմ Շիրակացու աշխատությունների մեծ մասը չի կորցրել իր արդիականությունը. հատկապես «Աշխարհացույցը» միտված է հիշեցնելու և վերարժևորելու մեր՝ հայրենիքի մասին գիտելիքները:
Անանիա Շիրակացին միջնադարյան հայ գիտական մտքի հիմնասյուներից է: Մ. Աբեղյանը Շիրակացուն համարել է բնական գիտությունների հիմնադիրը հայ իրականության մեջ: «Ինչքան էլ Անանիայից առաջ եղել է հայերի մեջ տոմարի ծանոթություն,- գրել է նա,- բայցևայնպես մեր այս «համարողն» իր բազմաթիվ գրվածքներով ռահվիրա է հանդիսացել տոմարագիտության, տիեզերագիտական և օդերևութաբանական գիտելիքների համար»:
